The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed miscarriage as the most common reason for losing a child during pregnancy. According to March of Dimes, an organization that works for maternal and child health, about 10-15 out of 100 pregnancies end in miscarriage.
Sadly, about 2 million babies are stillborn every year, but shockingly, the WHO states that many of these deaths are preventable. In an interview with the Hindustan Times, Dr. Jyothi Patil, obstetrician/gynaecologist at Milann – Fertility & Birthing Hospital in Bangalore revealed that pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) has shown amazing results in minimizing miscarriage rates.
For those who don’t know, PGT is an early form of prenatal genetic diagnosis that identifies the abnormal embryos and results in the transfer of genetically normal embryos. Patil claimed any “type of chromosome abnormality” is the “most common reason” behind miscarriage. Hence, genetic tests “detect changes in genes, chromosomes or proteins”.
dr. Patil added that about half of all miscarriages that occur in the first trimester are the result of “chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus.” She also revealed that IVF is also an option for such couples. “In vitro fertilization and embryogenetic testing are available for couples suspected of losing children due to recurrent genetic disorders. PGT has been shown to minimize miscarriage rates,” said Dr. patil.
While revealing that genetic issues can cause a variety of miscarriages, Dr. Saima Naz Khan, Senior Manager-Scientific Affairs at Genes2Me Pvt Ltd, told Hindustan Times that genetic testing can be very helpful for couples who have had various pregnancy losses and want to know what causes them. those miscarriages. She suggested that the couples undergo “microarray chromosomal testing,” which she claimed was an advanced technology that “analyzes thousands of DNA samples simultaneously.” Speaking of the process, she explained that no cells from the fetus are needed, as the “fetal samples are taken directly from the DNA.” She added that this process has the caliber to detect chromosomal abnormalities to a high degree.
