FATHER’S DAY: HISTORY
Did you know that Father’s Day was first celebrated in the United States after a mining accident on July 5, 1908, in which hundreds of men died? Grace Golden, daughter of a devoted pastor, suggested a Sunday service for all the men who lost their lives in the tragic accident, according to the almanac.
Years later, Sonora Smart suggested Dodd the idea of celebrating Father’s Day because she wanted to honor her father, William Jackson Smart. Dodd’s father was a Civil War veteran who raised her and her five siblings as single parents. After her education, Dodd began promoting Father’s Day nationally.
WHEN DID FATHER’S DAY BEGIN TO BECOME POPULAR?
It became popular when former US President Richard Nixon signed a statement in 1972, after which Father’s Day began to be celebrated every year on the third Sunday in June.
HOW TO CELEBRATE FATHER’S DAY?
While you don’t need one day to express your love and concern for your fathers, you can certainly seize the opportunity by making this day special for them. While children can give cards, gifts and flowers to their fathers, people can also plan dinner dates, a family dinner or other outing. There are also plenty of gift ideas. However, given our busy lifestyles, some quality time is the greatest gift you can give your dads.
