A stuffy nose can make you feel quite frustrated. Imagine not being able to smell a delicious plate of biryani because of a stuffy nose – very annoying. In addition to not being able to enjoy the food, someone with a stuffy nose can also complain of sleeping problems. This condition worsens in the case of children. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children under the age of five often catch colds and nasal congestion. Since their immunity is already weak, be extra careful about your child’s stuffy nose as it can lead to serious problems later on.
Before letting your toddler take any medication, try some home remedies first. Here are a few home remedies that may be helpful in treating your child’s stuffy nose:
Consumption of fluids
It may be easier for your child to cough up mucus if it is diluted by water or other liquids. If your little one has a fever accompanied by a stuffy nose, you can make him drink a lot. It will also be beneficial to prevent dehydration. If your child gets picky about drinking water, make sure they have the liquid in quirky mugs and cups.
Inhalation of steam
A toddler can breathe more easily in a warm, moist environment and secrete thick mucus than in a cold one. Consider bathing your baby in warm water before bed. Then remove them from the bath, increase the temperature of the shower and close the bathroom door. Sit with your little one and let the steam fill the room. However, keep in mind that the temperature should not be so high that it makes it difficult for your child to breathe.
Change the sleeping position
Nasal congestion in children usually gets worse at night. It is because when one is lying down, the sinuses cannot empty as quickly. Some children who suffer from constipation sleep with their mouths open at night. They also tend to feel more thirsty. To relieve the symptoms of congestion, as a parent you can have your child sleep head down on some pillows or on a lounger in an even more upright position.
Use humidifier
A humidifier, especially one that emits a cooling mist, is responsible for keeping the air moist. This can reduce congestion in your child and relieve a dry cough, especially at night. Put a humidifier in the nursery and make sure to keep it clean.
Chicken soup
Who doesn’t love a bowl of tasty chicken soup? Your child will love this dish if they suffer from nasal congestion. According to Medical News Today, chicken soup may reduce upper respiratory tract inflammation in children, which should slowly ease the symptoms of a cold with congestion.
