On a sultry evening in front of an enthusiastic crowd, Akshay Kottary, head coach at Martiny Mixology of Mangalore, defeated Karnataka finalists from across the country to take home the coveted title of India’s prestigious MONIN Cup 2022.
The 2022 India Round lineup was packed with talented and experienced bartenders from across the country, including Hemali Bendre of Bombay Canteen and Akshay Waghmare of Pass Code Only, who came in second.
For the inexperienced, the Monin Cup is an international bartending competition held in more than 50 countries to discover the most skilled mixologists. Kottary will now compete at a global level with finalists from different countries at the International Grand Final for the prestigious MONIN Cup in France towards the end of the year.
The finalists from all corners of the country were selected in recent weeks through regional competitions in Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi.
Germain Araud, Managing Director of Monin India Pvt Ltd, said: “MONIN Cup competitions are a great platform for the budding bartenders in the country to come forward and showcase their exceptional talent to the world. We wanted them to have a professional stage offer to thrive and learn new skills through this competition. There was an overwhelming response from all parts of the country and the participants outdid themselves with recipes executed with utmost artistry. The opportunity to represent their home country is a great feat to achieve and we also saw some tough competition in the final.”
The event was judged by Yangdup Lama, beverage trainer consultant and co-owner of Sidecar bar, Sahith Sethuraman, co-founder, Greenhouse by Bacardi, Karina Aggarwal, founder and director, Gigglewater Beverage Concepts Pvt. Ltd and Andrea Fidora, MONIN’s Regional Sales Director, Dubai. The jury members assessed all aspects such as presentation, efficiency, craftsmanship, appearance, smell, taste and respect for the theme.
In keeping with this year’s theme, Sharing Memorable Moments, participants used their skills, passion and ingenuity to create cocktails, each with an emotional backstory that resonated deeply with the audience. In the first round, participants were expected to prepare mocktails with a minimum of six ingredients, including a MONIN syrup. In the second round, mixologists were in for a surprise as they had to prepare a cocktail with a flavor that they had to choose from a draw.
Kottary said: “It’s a dream come true for me to win this prestigious title and then represent my country at the upcoming event in France. It was indeed a surreal experience to meet the best mixologists from around the country and get to know you guided by the stalwarts of the industry I am grateful to MONIN India for this opportunity and the past few weeks have been the best days of my life.”
