World Smile Day: History
Harvey Ball was an American artist who first imagined the celebration of World Smile Day. In 1963, he invented the iconic smiley face. Over time, Harvey found that the original meaning of his decal had been lost due to “overcommercialization.”
As a result of his concerns, he came up with the concept of World Smile Day, a day dedicated to acts of kindness. Since 1999, the first Friday in October has been declared World Smile Day. After his death in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was established to honor his name and memories.

People around the world celebrate World Smile Day in unique and imaginative ways. The Worcester Historical Society in Massachusetts, United States, has been celebrating this day since 2000 by throwing a ball. The ball hosts the Harvey Ball Smile Award and smiley-themed events and displays.
Hot air balloon competitions are also held with the launch of balloons with World Smile Day messages. Other fun activities and competitions such as Choral presentations, ‘Where’s the smiley?’ Competitions, cake-eating competitions and circus performances are also organized in various countries. Many organizations also hand out free food to the needy on this day.
Various events are also organized in hospitals and care homes to put a smile on the faces of the patients and the elderly.
