The Hindu festival Holi is a celebration of love, harmony and vibrant colors. We all celebrate this day completely by splashing each other with watercolors and varieties of gulaal. This gulaal is originally made of organic materials. A wide variety of bright flowers bloom in the spring and these are used as ingredients to make Holi colors. Earlier we used this natural process to create Holi colors.
But now, due to the mass popularity and increasing industrialization, these natural colors are now being replaced by some chemically synthetic processed colors. These are generally inexpensive compared to natural colors. By choosing artificial colors, we undermine our health through problems such as skin allergies, temporary blindness and even skin cancer.
So, this Holi season, it is imperative that you protect yourself and your loved ones by avoiding the toxic colors available in the market. In other words, play a safe Holi by making natural homemade colors.
Making Holi colors at home can be a bit time consuming. But do not worry. Here are some simple and quick tips to prepare natural Holi colors without side effects:
red: To make red color, choose red hibiscus flowers or china rose flowers. Dry them well and then grate them into a thin powder. To increase the amount of powder, you can add an equal amount of rice flour. Similarly, boil the pomegranate peels in water for wet colors.
Yellow: Similarly, to make yellow color gules, use turmeric which is readily available in the kitchen. To make a fine powder, mix the turmeric with gram flour, keeping a 1:2 ratio. Otherwise, you can crush any yellow-colored flowers such as marigolds or chrysanthemums. If you want wet colors, combine them with water.
Vegetable: To get a green gulaal, you can choose some mehendi powder. For wet colors, use green leafy vegetables and dip them in the water for a few minutes.
Pink: For pink color, beetroot can be a good source. First soak the sliced beetroot in water. Then boil it and let it sit overnight.
