Indian Air Force Day: History and Key Facts
- The IAF evolved from the Royal Indian Air Force, founded on October 8, 1932. The current version of the IAF was born in 1950.
- The IAF fought in four wars against Pakistan, in 1947-48, 1965, 1971 (Bangladesh War) and 1999 (Kargil War).
- It helped bring Goa into the Indian Union in 1961.
- In 1962, the IAF provided vital supplies to the Indian forces fighting the Chinese army.
- The IAF helped capture the Siachen Glacier in 1984.
- In 1988, the IAF prevented the People’s Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) from overthrowing the government in the Maldives.
- The IAF provides support during natural disasters and rescues Indian citizens from foreign lands during crises. It collaborates with the Department of Space and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Rakesh Sharma, who went into space in 1984, was an IAF pilot.
