History
The International Day of Sports for Development and Peace began in 2013 when the United States General Assembly declared April 6, the day that the very first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens, in 1896 as the day of celebration to emphasize the importance of sports . Following the example, the day has been celebrated annually on April 6 since 2014.
Meaning
In 2015, the following year after the first-ever IDSDP was observed, sport was included in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, after it was considered a crucial factor for sustainable development. The IDSDP therefore acts as a drive-cum platform for countries to focus some of their investment and energy on the development of sport in terms of infrastructure and quality education, and awareness among the masses, especially the youth.
Theme
This year’s theme of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is ‘Securing a Sustainable and Peaceful Future for All: The Contribution of Sport’. The theme glorifies the importance of using sport as a means to create a better future for humanity. Within this theme, the primary focus will be on climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
