Psoriasis is not contagious, but if not treated early, it can lead to serious conditions
The most common misconception about various skin diseases is that they are contagious and it is no different for psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the rapid build-up of skin cells. This buildup of cells results in scaling on the skin’s surface. Inflammation and redness are among the most common symptoms of psoriasis.
In patients suffering from psoriasis, red and white patches usually appear on the skin in different parts of the body, such as knees, elbows, trunk and scalp. Despite advances in medical science and the emergence of effective treatments, several misconceptions exist about this skin condition.
Recently, Ayurveda expert Dr. Nitika Kohli a series of photos on Instagram that debunk the myths about psoriasis.
dr. Kohli, who breaks down some common misconceptions about the skin disease: “How many times have you had to explain to someone that psoriasis isn’t contagious? We’re here to fix that — as well as a few other misconceptions.”
She started by debunking the most common myth about psoriasis that it’s contagious. The Ayurveda practitioner said, “Absolutely not!” Another common myth that revolves around this skin condition is that only adults get psoriasis. dr. However, Kohli said people of any age can be affected by this skin infection.
It is believed that there is no treatment for psoriasis. However, the expert emphasized that there are safe and effective Ayurvedic treatments for this skin condition.
Often people do not take this skin condition seriously and consider psoriasis only as itchy skin. dr. Kohli suggested that if not treated early, it could have serious consequences.
“It is also linked to a number of potentially worrisome health problems, including diabetes, liver disease and heart disease. It can affect your joints and cause arthritis, also known as psoriatic arthritis.”
dr. Kohli also said that psoriasis can also be genetic. There are different types of skin conditions such as pustular psoriasis, gutta psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, and erythrodermic psoriasis. The symptoms and treatment for each type can be different.
