In addition to heat waves and scorching heat, summer also brings constipation caused by dehydration. The rising temperature can cause water to drain away from your body, making stool even harder and harder to pass. And this time, due to the pandemic and our limited movements, the problem of constipation is likely to become more chronic these days. It is recommended to drink water and other liquids, such as fruit and vegetable juices, along with soups, to help the fiber work better.
While we know how to avoid constipation, it is very important to know which foods to avoid in case they suffer from this stomach problem. It goes without saying that foods with little or no fiber should be avoided. Ayurveda expert Dr. Dixa Bhavsar advises her followers to keep their distance from three C’s, if they are hiding.
Bhavsar explains that while cumin is good for digestion, it is also drying and absorbent in nature at the same time, which will aggravate constipation. She said cumin increases pitta, meaning it improves digestion, but it’s also rooksha (dehydrating in nature) and grahi — the one that absorbs. So the expert said, while it’s great for appetite, diarrhea, IBS, but not for constipation.
Curds are heavy to digest and absorbent in nature therefore one should avoid it if they are constipated. Curd is ruchya (enhances taste), ushna (hot in nature) and vatajit (balances vata), but it is also guru (heavy to digest) and grahi (absorbent in nature, just like cumin), making it incompatible for constipation,” the Ayurveda expert said.
If you’re one of those who brag about staying true to caffeine despite rising temperatures, we have to tell you, this could get you in trouble. Coffee consumption can cause dehydration and make your constipation worse. Bhavsar said many believe that caffeine stimulates the muscles in the digestive system and causes easy bowel movements, but it’s not true. Since caffeine can cause dehydration, it will have the opposite effect and lead to constipation. “So if you’re constipated, avoid it or go decaf,” she suggested.
