Is it a good idea to feed your dog part of your meal? Even if dining with our loved ones makes us happy and our pets are a lot like our family members, we should avoid the urge to feed them what we eat because they don’t have the same digestive system as we do. Instead, to improve their health and protect them from deadly infections, their food bowl should contain dog-friendly food. Chapatis, cookies, sweet and salty snacks, processed foods and other items should not be given to your furry friends as they could injure them.
Whether it’s dry food, wet food or homemade food, certain substances should be avoided when it comes to dog food, according to Dr. Dilip Sonune, Veterinary Officer, Wiggles. “While dogs seem like they can eat and digest anything, it couldn’t be further from reality,” he adds.
The following list of ingredients should never be used in dog food.
A dog’s digestive system is not designed to process wheat-based foods such as refined flour. Do not give your pet biscuits and chapatis made from wheat, as these can cause chronic diarrhea, loss of coat health and other problems. Inflammatory disease of the small intestine can occur in dogs that are sensitive or allergic to gluten.
Sugar and artificial sweeteners are two more common things in the home that are harmful to dogs. Sugars in biscuits can cause diabetes in dogs, weight problems and even poor dental health. It can cause diarrhea. Another artificial sweetener present in peanut butter, xylitol, can cause liver failure in dogs. Since even dogs need natural sugars in the form of glucose to produce energy, natural sugars in fruits and vegetables suitable for pets are fine to eat.
Inflammation of the scalp is caused by an increase in blood sugar caused by high sugar intake. This results in hair loss of both good quality and quantity, leading to dandruff, dryness and damaged hair follicles.
A complete and balanced pet food should contain less than 1% salt. Since salt is often added to pet foods by manufacturers for flavor and to encourage water consumption, salt is usually present in significant amounts in pet foods. High salt intake can increase the risk of high blood pressure and other diseases such as stomach cancer, stroke and cardiovascular disease.
4. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO):
Dogs are just as susceptible to the negative effects of genetically modified crops and food products as humans. Pesticides and herbicides destroy their internal organs and cause damage. They can also weaken the immune system, lead to cognitive impairment and cause a variety of food and skin sensitivities. The ideal dog food choice is one that meets the AAFCO nutrient profile and is labeled as non-GMO. While raw foods often score well on these criteria, it is recommended that you speak with your veterinarian before making any changes to your pet’s diet.
5. Artificial Food Coloring:
Although dogs cannot detect color, artificial food coloring is often added to dog food to make it aesthetically pleasing to humans rather than dogs. Dogs with severe food allergies and hyperacidity have both been associated with the most popular food dyes (Blue 2, Red 40, and Yellow 5 and 6). If the color of your dog food changes over time, it suggests that human-grade natural components have been used, which is a good indicator.
6. Vegetable Oil:
Soybean and corn oil are the main components of vegetable oil. It can be added to manufactured pet food, which can be an inflammation trigger. This can damage your dog’s joints, exacerbate hip and joint pain and lead to arthritis. On the other hand, dogs can safely eat corn and soybean meal.
“Pet owners should keep in mind that human and dog food are not interchangeable. Feeding dogs food that we prepare at home may not be a balanced and complete meal because our digestive system is more complex than that of dogs. In addition to omega fatty acids, dogs also need certain antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that they cannot produce on their own. Determine the right diet for your dog to ensure they are healthy, active, and happy,” says Dr. Sonune.
