Each of us has been verbally abused at least once in our childhood for not wanting to drink milk. Time and again, our elders suggest that we include milk in our daily meals, even after we have reached adulthood. Have you ever wondered why they advocate so strongly for milk? It’s calcium.
Needless to say, the health of our bones deteriorates over time. And bone health isn’t getting enough importance. It’s high time we made changes now before it’s too late.
Here are a few things to avoid to keep your bones healthy.
- Smoking and alcohol
Not only for your bone health, but you should also quit smoking for overall life expectancy. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), smoking contributes to bone loss and fractures. And this is probably done because of the interference with estrogens, calcium and vitamin D.
Smoking is responsible for weaker bone balance and is a major risk factor for bone loss. On the other hand, if you drink alcohol excessively, your body’s caliber to absorb and regulate calcium, vitamin D and hormones is hampered. In addition, it can lead to the risk of bone density loss and fracture. - Too much salt
Hardly anyone has ever told us that the more salt we eat, the more calcium our body loses. According to NCBI, high salt intake is not only related to osteoporosis and urinary calcium loss, but has also been linked to many pathological conditions such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and calcium stones in the kidneys. The foods we prefer while binge-watching, such as chips, popcorn, nachos, etc., are perhaps the ones with the highest salt content. To keep the balance, you don’t have to cut out salt entirely, but your intake should be less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day.
- Canned/Processed Food
The link between ultra-processed foods and reduced bone quality has been proven by researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. While canned food makes our lives easier by saving our time, it can also lead to bone inflammation if consumed on a daily basis. Also, some of the packaged food items are highly responsible for bone inflammation. Little did we know that some of the healthiest vegetables like mushrooms, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and eggplant can also lead to bone inflammation.
