From your favorite beauty blogger’s photo to the stocked shelves of a beauty store, sheet masks and facial serums are always in our faces. For the inexperienced, sheet masks and facial serums are made of active ingredients that, when absorbed into the skin, provide instant hydration along with various benefits for plump, glowing, and dewy skin.
But how are they different from each other and which one is for you, we know these questions torment you all the time. Let’s dig deeper to know these answers.
Leaf masks
A sheet mask is a pre-cut, thin mask soaked in serum and natural ingredients. These are usually made of paper, fiber or thin films that moisturize the skin. Due to the eye, nose and lip cutouts, they cover your entire face evenly and neatly. Just take the mask out of the packaging and gently press it against your face.

Sheet masks can help with various skin problems as they contain ingredients such as rice water, aloe vera, vitamin C, green tea and hyaluronic acid. “To protect the skin from airborne pollutants and other irritants, sheet masks are applied to the skin and left in place for 15 to 20 minutes. The skin receives nutrients and retains moisture between the mask and the skin. It may be helpful to add sheet masks to your post-treatment or post-peel routine. A sheet mask can increase skin hydration,” says Dr. Poorva Shah, dermatologist
Facial serums
Serums are skin care products with significant concentrations of a wide variety of active ingredients, including vitamins, peptides, acids and many others. These active ingredients work together to address certain skin care concerns. “Serums are usually runny, translucent, gel-based and thinner than moisturizers. As a result, your skin looks healthier. Based on your skin condition, serums can help alleviate the condition,” adds Dr. Shah.
Choose a face serum with salicylic acid and retinol if you have acne-prone and oily skin. Try something with hyaluronic acid for dry skin.
What’s your choice?
It is entirely up to you to choose the best tool for your skincare regimen.
But ideally one should use both as both have their benefits. It’s best to ask your dermatologist to recommend any of these products that are best suited for your skin and the issues you want to address.
