I don’t know if you noticed or not, but showing off the midriff is back in fashion and this time it’s a lot more inclusive. Let’s think about the early 2000s, the bare midriff look was everything, all the big stars in Hollywood played it – from Jeniffer Aniston to Kiera Knightly.
Pop icons like Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus almost turned it into a cult.
Closer to home, Kareena Kapoor was all about the diaphragm. From “You are my Soniya” to “Chaliya Chaliya,” Bebo knew no one could flaunt it like her and so she used it for the T, but hey, we’re not complaining!
Unsurprisingly, though, all of these women had a certain body type and we were constantly fed the fact that no one except those who could show off their abs were allowed to show off their bellies in public.
And while many fashion historians trace the trend back to the early 1940s and 50s in the US, when women were actively involved in sports, celebrity stylist and owner of the Nextiles brand, Suchismita Dasgupta, has a different take on it.
She says: “In India, showing off the midriff has been a trend for centuries because of the type of clothing that women wore. But during the Victorian era and although the Bramho women and Parsees were the standard-bearer of independent styling and fashion; clothes were worn more conservatively, which meant you didn’t show any provocative part of your body.”
“Later, since the 1920s, showing off the midriff in fashion was considered provocative and seductive and you had to have a flat stomach to do it and it stayed that way until about a few years ago,” Suchismita added. .
However, after the pandemic, we saw many fashion trends from the 2000s back in action, but the one thing most of these fashion trends had in common was the desire to show off their skin.
During the pandemic, people realized how fragile life is and the need to celebrate themselves and their bodies. People understood that it was okay enough to be healthy and not have what society promoted as the “perfect body.”

And more than just showing off their skin, people learned to feel comfortable in their own bodies and fully own their shapes and sizes.
Aashna Bhagwani, a social media influencer promoting “size-inclusive fashion,” believes-
“A belly doesn’t always have to be flat. It is high time that these unrealistic pressures were removed. Some have six pack abs and some have belly fat and there is nothing wrong with that. I am thankful for my body that allows me to do what I need to do. Women have curves, cellulite and ticks on the thighs, stretch marks and cellulite and we have to recognize that!”
“Clothes or rather fashion is a form of expression. The fact that showing off the midriff is back in fashion and that women of all shapes and different age groups participate in it means that they are not only embracing themselves as they are, they now own it. It’s liberating,” said Chitrangada Satarupa, actor and owner of Candy’d Closet, a sustainable fashion retailer.
She went on to say, “I’m personally very happy to see this transition that we’ve been through as a generation.”
Celebrities around the world have made the most of this y2k fashion trend and we love it oh so much. Here are a few more looks that prove this is every celeb’s go-to style-
Samantha Ruth Prabhu
Well, all the rumors about Samantha trying to experiment more with her looks are true after all. Cheers for this Sam who is much more confident and doesn’t give a damn what the world thinks about her. She owns every bit of her look.
Kendall Jenner
Our girl Kenny J loves to show off her belly whether that’s on the runway or on an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians and mind you, she’s always nailing it.

Mindy Kaling
The other best thing about the trend this time around is the fact that it’s age-appropriate too. Watch Mindy Kaling see her most amazing self. There are chances she channeled her inner Kelly Kapoor.
This trend is definitely here to stay and yes, people will stare, so make it worth it. Remember it takes years for people to get out of the social conditioning of accepting a certain body type, but you don’t have to wait for someone to be okay with the way you dress – You do You!
