Are you a nursing mother? Why do we ask? Because you may experience some health and hormonal issues especially during monsoons. Doctors often recommend that breastfeeding mothers check for lumps and abnormalities around the breasts. Timely intervention can prevent the infection from spreading.
One of the most common problems a nursing mother faces is yeast infections around the nipples. Due to the increased humidity, the fungi spread more quickly. If you experience pain in or around the nipples, it is recommended that you see a doctor. Thrush is a common yeast infection commonly seen in nursing mothers. It involves the overgrowth of the Canadian Albicans fungus that thrives in dark, moist and warm environments.
According to a report in Indian Express, Dr. Suman Bijlani, a gynecologist, obstetrician and endoscopic surgeon at SRV Hospital Mumbai, said: “Cases of nipple infections tend to peak in nursing mothers during the rainy season, as humidity is high and fungi spread quickly.”
The signs and symptoms of thrush are –
Severe nipple pain after feeding.
Burning and itching on the nipples.
Swelling in the nipples after breastfeeding.
Redness and inflammation around the areola and blisters.
Thrush can also make your nipples look flaky and blotchy.
Other possible reasons can include high levels of estrogen in the body, taking oral contraceptives, anemia, and moist nipples that can make yeast infections worse.
Doctors may recommend antifungal medications, creams, gels, and ointments for treatment. It is important that nursing mothers avoid self-medication and follow the doctor’s instructions.
Here are some preventive measures for nursing mothers in monsoon –
Keep your breast and nipple clean and dry
Wash the breast pump well
Wash your hands after touching your breasts, before feeding the baby and after changing the diaper
Avoid wearing tight clothing as it can be uncomfortable and can cause chafing around the nipples.
Choose cotton fabrics that let your skin breathe
Nipple thrush can make breastfeeding painful. Sometimes it can lead to the mother choosing to stop breastfeeding early.
