The risk of diabetes decreased by 21 percent in obese individuals who exercised.
The main cause for concern is leaner individuals, as they show an increased risk of type 2 diabetes with all weight loss strategies.
Everyone wants to lose unhealthy weight and lead a healthy life. In pursuit of their desired body weight, people follow every possible method. From a particular diet to exercising or consuming weight loss pills, they try everything. Sometimes they even prefer a combination of these methods. However, the million dollar question is which of these procedures is the right one? A study conducted by the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health stated that exercise is the most effective weight loss strategy.
During the four-year study, researchers found that the average weight achieved was 4.2 percent lower in obese individuals. This mean weight was 2.5 percent in overweight and 0.4 percent in lean individuals. These people chose exercise as a weight loss method. Their counterparts, who used weight management pills or other commercial programs, showed no significant progress. Among these people, obesity was able to reduce only 0.3 percent of their weight. On the other hand, instead of losing weight, overweight people gained 2 percent and leaner 3.7 percent more weight.
Exercise also has a significant effect on reducing the risk of diabetes. The risk of diabetes decreased by 21 percent in obese individuals who exercised. It could only be reduced by 13 percent in people taking pills.

For overweight people, exercise reduced the risk of diabetes by 9 percent. This risk shot up by as much as 54 percent in people taking pills. The main concern for leaner individuals is that they have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes with all weight loss strategies.
Does this mean that leaner individuals should stop exercising? dr. Ambrish Mithal said everyone, including those with a lower BMI, should continue to exercise regularly to maintain a healthy body weight. According to doctors, diabetes in leaner people can be caused by less production of insulin.
