Amid complaints from tourists who are experiencing difficulties finding accommodation in high-altitude areas due to a violent stampede, authorities in Ladakh have advised holidaymakers not to plan a stay in the Pangong Lake area without prior booking.
The Ladakh Tourism Department also advised tourists not to travel to high-altitude areas such as Khardongla, Changla, Pangong Lake, Tsomoriri and Penzela until 48 hours have passed since their arrival in Leh.
“The Pangong Lake area is a protected wildlife sanctuary and therefore accommodation availability is limited. Given the limited accommodation available, tourists/visitors should avoid planning to stay in Pangong without booking accommodation in advance,” Ladakh’s tourism department said in an advisory.
With a length of nearly 160 km, of which a third is in India and the other two thirds in China, Pangong Lake is the world’s highest saltwater body at an altitude of 4,350 meters, and a major attraction for the tourists visiting Ladakh.
The water, which appears to be painted blue, is in stark contrast to the arid mountains surrounding it. The advisory was issued on Friday to ensure a safe visit and stay for the tourists in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
“Tourists/visitors are advised to travel by road/air to Ladakh with proper pre-booking (via registered travel agencies/tour operators) of accommodation…Tourists/visitors are advised not to go to high altitude areas such as Khardongla, Changla, Pangong Lake, Tsomoriri, Penzela etc. before 48 hours from the time of landing/arrival in Leh,” it was advised.
To avoid inconvenience, the consultancy asked visitors to book a taxi/transportation in advance through registered travel agencies and tour operators.
“Tourists/visitors are advised to contribute to keeping all tourist spots and along all routes clean. They are advised to respect nature, the environment, local traditions and culture and to follow all rules, regulations and (official) advice.
