On the auspicious day of Vat Savitri Vrat, worshiping Lord Vishnu and the Banyan tree is believed to fulfill a woman’s prayers for a happy married life. After prayer, women also tie yarn around the trunks of a banyan tree. However, many people wonder why women worship the Banyan tree. According to Dr. Mrityunjay Tiwari, assistant professor of Shri Kallaji Vedic University, Savitri and Satyavan’s story answers this question.
Why do women worship the banyan tree?
Savitri was the daughter of Rajarshi Ashwapati. Savitri had chosen Satyavan as her husband. Satyavan was the son of forest king Dyumatsen. Naradji informed them that Satyavan has a short life. Despite this, Savitri did not change her decision. Savitri married Satyavan and went to live in the forest to serve his family.
One day, while Satyavan had gone to the forest to chop wood, there he fell. Seeing this, Yamraj arrived to take Satyavan’s life. Savitri knew everything since she had been fasting for three days. She requested Yamraj not to take Satyavan’s life, but he did not agree.
Savitri started following them. Even after Yamraj often refused her, Savitri did not agree to go back. Satisfied with Savitri’s offering, Yamraj said she can ask him for 3 boons. As a first blessing, Savitri asked for light for Satyavan’s blind parents.
As a second blessing, she asked for the conquered kingdom of Satyavan’s blind parents. As a final blessing, Savitri asked Yamraj to bless her with 100 sons. Yamraj granted her these three wishes and realized that it was not possible to take Satyavan now.
Yamraj blessed Savitri with unbroken Saubhagyavati. At the same time, Yamraj lost his life by bringing Satyavan to life. At that time, Savitri was sitting with Satyavan under a banyan tree. Therefore, on this day, women wrap a thread around the banyan tree and pray. This vora is not considered complete without worshiping the Banyan tree.
