January is the month of harsh winters and cold winds in most parts of India. Temperatures drop to single digits and sometimes even below zero. In such conditions, viral fever, cold and cough are quite common. People around us always seem to have a runny nose or a sore throat. In winter, infection is normal, but people often complain that these symptoms persist for several days after recovery. A doctor sheds light on what post-viral cough and nose drops are in her Instagram video.
The clip is titled, “Why Does a Post-Viral Cough Last Long?” The doctor explained the reasons behind this in this video. She explained that cough and cold symptoms can last up to 18 days after healing from the infection. The post-infection cough and cold don’t require antibiotics to be cured and they go away automatically.
She further explained that there are two reasons for post-viral cough and cold. Let’s take a look at them:
When you are infected by a virus, the nerves of the respiratory tract (also known as the bronchial tree) and your immune system are sensitized by the initial infection. It may take some time for this sensitivity to go away. But until sensitivity persists, even a minor irritant, such as a dust particle or pollutant, can trigger the immune response or nerves of our airways, causing coughing.
The mucus production of the nose is also due to the initial reaction to an infection to clear the virus. This mucus may also take time to break down. When you relax in a lying position, this nasal droplet irritates your airways and again causes a cough.
