GANDHI JAYANTI 2022: In honor of Mahatma Gandhi, the man who pioneered the philosophy of nonviolence, the United Nations celebrated his birthday, October 2, as the International Day of Nonviolence. Because it was through his influence, the world now associates synonyms of “nonviolence” with Mahatma Gandhi.

International Day of Nonviolence 2022: Theme
The UN does not designate an annual theme for the International Day of Nonviolence. “Say No to Violence” is the essence of this day. However, the theme of International Day of Peace 2022 was closely related to the idea of this day. The theme was “End Racism. Build Peace.” The day was celebrated, “to strengthen the ideals of peace, observing 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire.”

International Day of Nonviolence: History
The leader of the Indian independence movement, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, served as an inspiration for social change and civil rights around the world. On June 15, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to declare October 2 as the International Day of Nonviolence.
According to the UN website, “the resolution affirms ‘the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence and the desire’ to ensure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence”.
International Day of Nonviolence: Meaning
The day brings awareness to the many forms of nonviolence that the world needs now. It has long evolved as just a pacifist. According to Professor Gene Sharp, a leading scholar of nonviolent resistance, there are 3 main categories of nonviolent action. These are: “protest and persuasion, including marches and vigils, non-cooperation and nonviolent intervention, such as blockades and occupations.”
In addition, with the growing conflicts around the world, it is paramount to bring the principles of nonviolence to the fore. It is a day to announce that social change can happen in peaceful ways.
