WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY 2023: World Hypertension Day is celebrated worldwide on May 17 every year. This year’s theme is “Accurately measure and control your blood pressure for a longer life”. The purpose of World Hypertension Day is to raise awareness about the importance of regularly measuring blood pressure and understanding the standard range to maintain good health.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hypertension is diagnosed when the pressure in your arteries is too high (140/90 mmHg and above). The condition is common, but can have serious consequences if left untreated. According to the World Health Organization, about 1.28 billion adults ages 30 to 79 worldwide are affected by hypertension, with a majority (two-thirds) living in low- and middle-income countries.
World Hypertension Day 2023: Symptoms
Hypertension does not typically present with noticeable symptoms in most individuals. But those with extremely high blood pressure levels (usually 180/120 or higher) may experience the following symptoms:
- Severe headache
- Breathing problems
- Vision changes
- Irregular heartbeat
World Hypertension Day 2023: Causes
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that high blood pressure typically develops over time. It can be attributed to unhealthy lifestyle choices such as insufficient exercise and poor dietary habits. Certain medical conditions such as obesity and diabetes can also increase your risk of developing high blood pressure. In some cases, high blood pressure can also occur during pregnancy.
World Hypertension Day 2023: Prevention
Lifestyle modifications can help lower blood pressure and improve overall health. While medication may still be necessary for some individuals, these changes may benefit anyone with hypertension. Here are some recommendations to help people with high blood pressure:

- Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables
- Change to a more active lifestyle and do exercises such as walking, running, swimming, dancing or lifting weights
- Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. You can also opt for 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week.
- Do strength-building exercises at least two days a week.
- Lose weight when overweight or obese.
- Stick to prescribed medication and keep appointments with health care providers.
World Hypertension Day 2023: Don’t
- Consume excessive amounts of salty foods (less than two grams per day is recommended).
- Smoke or use tobacco.
- Consume excessive amounts of alcohol (women should have no more than one drink per day and men no more than two drinks per day).
- Eat foods high in saturated or trans fats.
- Miss your medication.
