WORLD SOIL DAY 2022: December 5 has been marked as World Soil Day to raise global awareness about soil health and thus shed light on the efficient way to sustainably manage soil resources. In modern times, soil degradation has become a huge problem related to global climate change and soil degradation.
Adding to the problem is the negligence of environmental problems by many industries leading to mismanagement of farmland. To address the alarming problem on the global platform, World Soil Day highlights how soil degradation affects terrestrial fauna, reduces organic matter and also results in a decrease in soil fertility.
Many prominent leaders have taken up the baton to not only shed light on the issue, but also spearhead a campaign on soil conservation. One such person is Indian spiritual leader Sadhguru, who launched the global Save Soil effort this year.
The environmental initiative was organized through his Isha foundation. Sadhguru spoke to the leaders of 195 countries and presented his soil movement at the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
To promote his global initiative called “Journey to Save Soil,” the spiritual leader set out on a 100-day motorcycle tour, crossing approximately 26 countries. During the motorcycle campaign, he continued to advocate for the natural return of organic matter to agricultural processes.
On World Soil Day 2022, here are some quotes from Sadhguru on soil conversations:
- Land is not our property; it has come to us as an inheritance, and we must pass it on to future generations.
- The Save Soil movement is a love affair with the land and life around us, not a fight with anyone.
- The life of the soil is the most important thing, because the strength of the soil determines the strength of any life.
- Soil is currently the most important aspect of nature conservation. If we don’t stop soil degradation, the planet will not be conducive for people to live on.
- When you are in contact with the earth, it is not just an intellectual reminder – your body is reminded in a very fundamental way that it is only a piece of earth.
- Agriculture can only thrive on rich soil, it simply cannot be otherwise. Restoration of the soil is the stimulation of life.
- A land with rich soil and abundant water is the best gift we can offer future generations
- Without reversing land degradation, there is simply no way to reconcile the rapid decline in food production with the exponential growth in population size. This is our greatest generational privilege and most precious legacy.
- Soil is the most climate-friendly element on earth. With the recalibration of agricultural practices, soil can become an effective regulator of climate change.
- Healthy soil is the basis of all life on earth. Without addressing the immediate need to preserve the organic content of our soil, food security will inevitably be seriously threatened.
