WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2023: Wetlands – areas of land that are permanently or seasonally saturated with water – include ecosystems such as swamps, swamps, swamps and fens. Although sensitive, these ecosystems support a wide variety of plant and animal life. However, they are at risk from human activities such as urbanization, agriculture and industrial development, as well as from the effects of climate change. To raise awareness about wetlands and to emphasize the urgent need for their conservation, World Wetlands Day is celebrated on February 2 each year.
World Wetlands Day: History
World Wetlands Day was established in 1971 by the Ramsar Convention (officially the Convention on Wetlands) to underline the importance of wetlands and their conservation. February 2 was chosen as the date to observe this day as it marks the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on that date in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran. The day aims to highlight the critical role wetlands play in preserving biodiversity and supporting human well-being.
World Wetlands Day: Meaning
Wetlands are critical ecosystems that provide many important services to people and the environment, including water purification, flood control, habitat for diverse plant and animal species, and support for the livelihoods of local communities. Degradation and loss of wetlands reduce their ability to support biodiversity. Celebrating World Wetlands Day reminds people of the importance of these ecosystems and the need to protect them from degradation and loss. The day also provides an opportunity for governments, organizations and individuals to take action to conserve and restore wetlands, as well as raise public awareness of their value.
World Wetlands Day 2023: Theme
The theme of this year’s World Wetlands Day is ‘It’s Time for Wetlands Restoration’. The theme emphasizes the urgency to prioritize wetland restoration.
