British Prime Minister Boris Johnson canceled a trip to northern England on Thursday after a family member was diagnosed with Covid, officials said, a day after he apologized for a party that broke the lockdown.
“The Prime Minister will not be visiting Lancashire today because of a family member who tests positive for coronavirus,” a Downing Street spokesman said.
“He will follow guidelines for vaccinated close contacts, including daily tests and limiting contact with others.”
In the UK, fully vaccinated people no longer need to self-isolate after coming into contact with an infected person. But they are advised to “limit close contact with other people outside of your household”.
Johnson lives in a flat in Downing Street with his wife Carrie and their two small children.
For his critics, Johnson’s scrupulous adherence to the rules will now contrast with his attendance at a Downing Street garden party in May 2020, when Britain was under strict lockdown.
After countering the scandal for days, he offered “sincere apologies” on Wednesday, admitting that millions had witnessed the lockdown, even at the cost of missing the last goodbye to dying relatives.
But opposition parties and even some conservatives are demanding Johnson step down.
