The destruction of our country, the destruction of Europe. All US ports should be closed to Russian goods. We – peace is more important than income and we must defend this principle around the world. We were already part of the anti-war coalition – a large anti-war coalition that unites many countries, dozens of countries, the ones that also basically responded to President Putin’s decision to invade our country – but we need to do more and more .
We need to develop new tools to react quickly and stop the war. The large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24. And it would be fair if it ended within a day, within 24 hours, that the evil would be immediately punished. Today the world has no such tools. The war of the past has prompted our predecessors to establish institutions that should protect us from war. But unfortunately they don’t work. We see it, you see it.
War Between Russia and Ukraine: Important Things to Know
So we need new ones, new institutions, new alliances, and that’s what we offer. We propose to create an association, U-24, United for Peace, a union of responsible countries that have the strength and awareness to immediately stop conflicts, provide all necessary assistance within 24 hours if needed, even weapons, if necessary. Sanctions, humanitarian aid, political aid, finance, everything you need to keep the peace and quickly save the world, to save lives. In addition, such an association, such a trade union, could provide assistance to people who are dealing with natural disasters, man-made disasters, who have been victims of humanitarian crises or epidemics.
Remember how hard it was for the world to do the simplest thing? Just to give vaccines, vaccines against Covid to save lives, to prevent new strains. The world has taken months, years to do things like that much faster to make sure there are no human losses, no casualties. Ladies and gentlemen, Americans, if there were such an alliance today that is U-24, we could save thousands of lives in our country, in many countries of the world.
Those who need peace, those who suffer inhuman destruction. I ask you to watch one video — video of what the Russian troops were doing in our country, in our country. We have to stop it. We must prevent it, preemptively destroy any aggressor who wants to subjugate other nations. Watch the video.
[After video plays, Mr. Zelensky resumes his speech in English.]
Zelensky cast American support as a moral obligation.
And finally, to sum it up, today it is not enough to be the leader of the nation. Today it is necessary to be the leader of the world, to be the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace. Peace in your country no longer depends solely on you and your people. It depends on those next to you and those who are strong. Strong does not mean great. Strong is brave and ready to fight for the lives of his citizens and citizens of the world. For human rights, for freedom, for the right to live and die decently when your time comes, not when someone else, your neighbor.
Invoking America’s own image of itself as the leader of the free world, Zelensky argued that the United States had a moral obligation to help defend Ukraine — yes, any democracy under siege — even if it is not a member of the NATO.
The call had both emotional and patriotic undertones to members of Congress, and was a passage from his speech that was subsequently cited by several lawmakers.
