The joint session in the new Parliament will take place on Tuesday as the proceedings of a special session of Parliament move to the new building. During the joint meeting, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, BJP MP Maneka Gandhi and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Shibu Soren will speak for five minutes each, news agency ANI quoted sources as saying on Monday.
The three MPs are the longest-serving members of their respective houses: former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is the longest-serving member of Rajya Sabha, BJP MP Maneka Gandhi is the longest-serving member of Lok Sabha and Shibu Soren has served as MP for the longest period in both Houses of Parliament.
The other leaders who will speak at the first session of the new Parliament are Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
An emotional farewell to the old parliament
On Monday, the special session of Parliament got off to an emotional start with Prime Minister Modi announcing that the proceedings of Parliament will move to a new building on Tuesday. In his speech, Prime Minister Modi praised the vision of previous Prime Ministers. During the first day of the special session, parliamentary democracy in the past 75 years will be discussed.
“When I first entered this building as a member, I never thought I would receive so much love from people,” the Prime Minister said. “Emotional moment to say goodbye to this building; there are many bittersweet memories associated with it.”
After the first day of a special session of Parliament, Prime Minister Modi also chaired a meeting of the Union Cabinet, anticipating some big decisions during the special session. The meeting took place at the Annexe of Parliament where the Women Reservation Bill was discussed.
