Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar is at the center of a political furore over his comments criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for siding with Israel in their war with terrorist group Hamas. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave a bizarre response to Sharad Pawar’s comment and said it appears that the NCP chief will send Supriya Sule to Gaza to fight for Hamas.
“I think Sharad Pawar will send Supriya (Sule) to Gaza to fight for Hamas,” Himanta Biswa Sarma told news agency ANI when asked for a response to Sharad Pawar’s comments.
The Assam Chief Minister’s jibe comes at a time when Sharad Pawar made some comments on India’s response to the Israel-Hamas war. The NCP chief said all former Prime Ministers of India “stood firmly with Palestine”.
“We want peace in the world. Now there is a war going on between Israel and Palestine. The whole land belongs to Palestine and Israel is encroaching on their land. That place, that land and those houses, everything belonged to Palestine and later Israel took it about.” Israel is an outsider and the country originally belongs to Palestine. After the attack, Israel was formed,” Sharad Pawar told news platform India Today.
“Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee all had the same thoughts on the Israeli-Palestinian issue. It was always the Indian government’s position. India never stood behind anyone else. “India always stood behind people who originally owned the land and houses there (Palestine),” he said.
“It is very unfortunate that for the first time our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) stood by Israel and left the real issue there. He ignored the real issue. We must be clear about our position. The NCP’s position must be clear. clearly. We stand with the people who originally belonged to that country,” Pawar added.
Political storm
Sharad Pawar’s comments were not well received, especially among those in the BJP, as the NCP chief was criticized by party leaders and Union Minister Piyush Goyal called it ridiculous statements about India’s stand on a terror attack in Israel.
“It is very disturbing when a senior leader like Sharad Pawar ji makes ridiculous statements about India’s stand on a terror attack in Israel. The threat of terrorism must be condemned in all forms and everywhere in the world. It is unfortunate that someone who has served as both Defense Minister and Prime Minister of India has such a nonchalant view on terror-related issues,” Piyush Goyal wrote on X.
Reacting to the minister’s post on “As far as I know, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also made a statement on Palestine. He should read that first. “I think he will then understand what decision his government is taking,” he said.
