The recent allegations against NCP leader Sharad Pawar came under heavy criticism from NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad. An Ajit Pawar-led faction of the party is said to have targeted Sharad Pawar and accused him of running the party as a ‘personal fiefdom’.
Jitendra Ahwad defended Sharad Pawar and responded to the allegations with an emotional message. He highlighted how Sharad Pawar continued to support the faction despite being accused of running the party as a ‘personal fiefdom’.
“It is not a question of technical and legal details, the question is about sensitivity. Sharad Pawar is the man who raised you and stood behind you like a rock. You used words that he was running the party as a personal fiefdom; these words are against the character of Sharad Pawar,” Awhad said while speaking to reporters in Nagpur, ANI reported.
“Sharad Pawar has never done anything other than democratic principles,” he added.
Jitendra Ahwad was responding to questions a day after the Election Commission of India (ECI) summoned the NCP’s rival factions for a personal hearing on claims over the party’s name and symbol.
After Ajit Pawar’s rebellion, the National Congress Party split into two divisions. Now one faction is led by Sharad Pawar and the other is led by Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ajit Pawar.
The Ajit Pawar-led faction had revolted against Sharad Pawar and moved to the Election Commission. His faction claims the name and symbol of the party.
The Ajit Pawar-led faction approached the Election Commission in July this year. The faction claims the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the party symbol amid a feud between the two factions.
The EC then wrote to both factions of the party acknowledging the split. It also directed both Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar to share documents submitted to the polling station.
In July, the European Commission responded to a plea by Ajit Pawar and issued a protest notice to the Sharad Pawar-led NCP group. The petition claimed that Ajit Pawar would be declared NCP president and he would be given the party’s symbol as per the provisions of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.
