Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha could lose the Type VII government bungalow allotted to him after a Delhi court on October 6 reportedly lifted the interim stay imposed on the expropriation order issued earlier this years had been issued by the Rajya Sabha (RS) Secretariat.
The RS Secretariat had issued a notice to Chadha in March to vacate the Type VII bungalow on Pandara Road, New Delhi, by July 2022. Instead, he would be assigned another bungalow of relatively lower quality.
However, Chadha had moved the Delhi Patiala House Courts in April and managed to get an interim stay against the expropriation order.
Lifting the same, the Delhi bench headed by Justice Sudhanshu Kaushik today said that the AAP MP has failed to underline the urgency behind his demand for an interim stay, The Indian Express reported. “…the plaintiff (Raghav Chadha) does not have any right over the accommodation and his status is similar to that of a licensee, which can be revoked at any time by the competent authority,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.

Chadha said in an earlier application that the expropriation order would have negative consequences for him as he stays in the official accommodation with his parents. He alleged that the RS Secretariat’s order was arbitrary and the reasons for it were not given, the report said.
Notably, Chadha was nominated to the Upper House of Parliament from Punjab in March 2022, weeks after the AAP came to power in the state. Initially he was allocated a type VI bungalow, but later he was allocated a type VII bungalow at his request.
According to the Rajya Sabha Handbook, new MPs like Chadha are eligible for Type V accommodations. The next level category, Type VI, is retained for former foreign ministers, nominated members of parliament, leaders of political parties, members who are at least in their second term, and those who have served as deputy speaker of the Senate served.
The Type VII bungalows are allotted to MPs who are former Lok Sabha speakers, former governors, former chief ministers or former Union ministers, according to the handbook.
