Most of the candidates former President Donald J. Trump has supported in contested Republican primaries won in this early phase of the 2022 midterm elections. Many of those he supported ran unopposed or faced little-known, poorly funded opponents.
However, some significant losses have been incurred.
Here’s a look at Mr Trump’s endorsement in some of the most watched races.
A Pennsylvania win and one important race was too close to mention
Doug Mastiano, a state senator and retired army colonel who has propagated numerous false claims about the 2020 election and attended the protest that sparked the Capitol riot, won the Republican nomination for Pennsylvania governor. Mr Trump backed him just days before the May 17 primaries.
In the state’s critical Republican primaries, it’s not yet known how Mr. Trump’s endorsement of… dr. Mehmet Ozu will play out. The race between Dr. Oz and Dave McCormick was extremely exciting and an official recount is likely. Kathy Barnette, who had a late rise in the race, was in a strong third.
Two wins and a loss in North Carolina
Representative Ted Buddwho was supported by Mr. Trump and the influential anti-tax group Club for Growth, won the Republican nomination for the Senate, and Bo Hinesa 26-year-old political novice who captivated Mr. Trump was catapulted to victory in his Republican primaries for a House seat outside of Raleigh.
But Representative Madison Cawthorn succumbed to the weight of repeated scandals and blunders. He was impeached in his May 17 primary, a caustic rejection of a Trump-approved candidate. Voters chose Chuck Edwards, a state senator, in the overcrowded primary.
Ohio wins
The Senate Candidate JD Vance won his hard-fought primary over a field of well-funded candidates, nearly all of whom set themselves up as Trump-esque Republicans. Mr. Vance, an author and venture capitalist, had transformed himself in 2016 from a self-proclaimed “never Trump man” to an “America First” candidate in 2022. His long-running campaign benefited financially from the heavy spending of his former boss Peter Thiel, a billionaire founder of PayPal.
Max MillerTrump, a former Trump aide who denied charges of assaulting an ex-girlfriend and later supported by Mr. Trump, won his House primary after two other Republican incumbent officials chose not to run. Representative Anthony Gonzalez, who had voted to impeach Trump, retired after just two terms. Representative Bob Gibbs, a Trump supporter, dropped out after his district was redrawn late in the campaign, pitting him against Mr. Miller.
Mr Trump also endorsed Madison Gesiotto Gilbert, a lawyer and former beauty queen who had been a surrogate for his presidential campaign. She won a seven-time primary to an open congressional seat vacated by Representative Tim Ryan, a Democrat running for the Senate.
A win in West Virginia
In a sitting on sitting House primary, Representative Alex Mooney triumphed over Representative David McKinley in a newly elected congressional district that largely overlaps the one Mr. McKinley has represented for more than a decade.
Understand the 2022 midterm elections
Why are these midterms so important? This year’s races could tip the balance of power in Congress to Republicans, shattering President Biden’s agenda for the second half of his term. They will also test former President Donald J. Trump’s role as GOP kingmaker. Here’s what you need to know:
Mr. Trump’s approval was seen as the deciding factor in the race, in which Mr. Mooney attacked Mr. McKinley for supporting President Biden’s infrastructure spending agenda, and for voting to create the committee to oversee the January 6 attack on Mr. the Capitol by supporters of Mr. Trump.
A loss in Nebraska
Charles W. Herbstera wealthy agribusiness executive, lost his three-time primary to Jim Pillen, a University of Nebraska regent backed by Governor Pete Ricketts, who has long clashed with Trump and whose term is limited.
Mr. Herbster had linked his identity with Mr. Trump’s, stylizing himself as a brash political outsider who took over the “swamp” of Lincoln, the state capital. Mr Trump last year backed Mr Herbster, a longtime financial supporter. Late in the campaign, Mr. Herbster accused of groping several women. Mr Herbster denied the charges, saying they were orchestrated by his political rivals. Mr Trump then held a meeting for him.
And another loss in Idaho
Idaho Governor Brad Little overcame Mr. Trump’s approval of the state’s lieutenant governor, Janice McGeachinwho challenged him in the Republican primaries.
Ms. McGeachin, who made headlines for defying Mr. Little’s pandemic injunctions, had tried to win over ultra-conservatives in the scarlet state Mr. Trump overwhelmingly wore in 2016 and 2020. But she seemed to garner less than 30 percent of the vote in Idaho, which has separate primaries for governor and lieutenant governor — the genesis of the tense pairing.
