The Press Information Bureau (PIB) termed as ‘baseless allegation’ Congress’ claims that the Prime Minister misled the public by stating that a Group of 20 (G20) meeting was taking place in Chhattisgarh.
Prime Minister and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Narendra Modi had on Thursday visited Chhattisgarh, the state where assembly elections will be held later this year.
The Congress had accused Prime Minister Modi of misinformation, alleging that he had misled the public attending the election rally and claiming that a G20 meeting had been held in Chhattisgarh.
The Chhattisgarh Congress’ social media post read: “The country’s Prime Minister came to Chhattisgarh, lied and left,” along with an excerpt of Modi’s speech.
“PIB Fact Check, if you have courage, tell me when the G20 meeting in Chhattisgarh took place?,” the message further read.
In response, PIB tweeted that a G20-related program was indeed being implemented in the state.
“A two-day Youth-20 (Y20) mentoring program was successfully organized at the Indian Institute of Management, Raipur from February 25 to 26. Y20 is the official participation group of the G20,” the PIB said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Further, the central ministry of information and broadcasting had also claimed that a two-day Y20 consultation event was held on February 25 at the Indian Institute of Management, Raipur, where Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur was also present.
What is the Y20 consultation event?
According to a report published by Hindustan Times, Youth20 (Y20) provides a platform for the youth to express their ideas on what they think the priority of the G20 summit should be and send recommendations to the G20 leaders.
According to the report citing official data, a total of 883 outreach programs were conducted under the Y20 India programme. These events were organized from January 12 to August 16 in collaboration with universities, think tanks and organizations.
Further, the Government of India also organized 370 Y20 Gujarat Yuva Samvads in 33 districts of the state and 119 Y20 Chaupals in 52 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
From one such outreach programme, a Y20 consultation session titled “Youth Dialogue with Youth Minister” was held with Anurag Thakur at the IIM Raipur in the last week of February.
The Y20 Summit took place on August 17 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
