New Delhi: Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has said that the war between Russia and Ukraine was making humanity tired. The Brazilian leader, popularly known as Lula, was in town to attend the G20 leaders’ summit.
In his remarks at a press conference, Lula praised the fact that the G20 countries were able to issue a joint statement, in which Brazil would have played a crucial role.
“On the Russia-Ukraine crisis, India worked very closely with Brazil, South Africa and Indonesia. I want to say that it was the emerging markets that played a very key role. Very tough and brutal negotiations have been going on non-stop for several days,” Indian G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said at a press conference.
Brazil will officially take over the presidency of the G20 on December 1. Lula expressed hope that President Xi Jinping of China and President Vladimir Putin of Russia would attend the G20 summit in Brazil in 2024.
The G20 countries were able to agree on a joint statement after resolving differences over the language used to refer to the war in Ukraine. Brazilian Lula was an outspoken supporter of the concept of a club of neutral countries pushing for peace in the war. Lula also called on the US to “stop encouraging war and start talking about peace.” This had provoked a sharp response from America, which accused the Brazilian president of “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda.”
Lula also called for reform of international institutions during his press conference. India and Brazil are part of the G4 group of countries, which also includes Japan and Germany. These four have pushed for an expansion of the United Nations Security Council and have agreed to support each other’s bids for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
“What happened at the G20 is more important than the money spent organizing it. The Global Biofuels Alliance is a great initiative, so we must say that India has invested the money, not spent the money,” Lula said of India’s new initiative, which was launched at the G20.
He also discussed the prospect of including other groups in the G20.
“The countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) are already part of the G20: Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. Membership of the African Union was very important. Let’s see if the situation also develops for other groups,” said President Lula. The African Union became a permanent member of the G20 in 2023.
