Voters in seven states weighed in on key contests in Tuesday’s primaries. Here’s a rundown of some of the most notable wins and losses:
California
San Francisco recalled its progressive prosecutor, Chesa Boudin. Mr Boudin had made sweeping reforms since he was elected two years ago and was criticized for increasing crime.
Billionaire developer Rick Caruso and Representative Karen Bass will face a runoff for mayor of Los Angeles.
Governor Gavin Newsom, who easily defeated a Republican-led recall last year, will face state senator Brian Dahle, a Republican.
Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, advances to the November runoff election after taking first place in the open primaries for that office. A second candidate has not yet been found.
Representative Michelle Steel, a freshman Republican, will face Jay Chen, a Democrat and Navy reservist.
Scott Baugh, a former leader of the California Assembly, fended off a crowded Republican field Tuesday to earn the right to challenge Representative Katie Porter.
Representative Mike Garcia, a Republican, will face Christy Smith, a former Democratic state legislator for the third time.
Kevin Kiley, a Republican state legislator backed by former President Donald J. Trump, will face Democrat Kermit Jones, a Navy veteran and physician, in the Third Congressional District.
New Jersey
Robert J. Menendez Jr., the son of Senator Bob Menendez, won his House Democratic primary in the Eighth Congressional District.
Tom Kean Jr., a former legislator and the son of a two-year New Jersey governor, won the Republican nomination in the state’s seventh congressional district. He now faces Representative Tom Malinowski, the Democratic incumbent.
Iowa
New Mexico
Mark Ronchetti, a former television meteorologist in Albuquerque, was the Republican’s choice to challenge Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.
Gabe Vasquez, a Las Cruces city councilman, won the Democratic nomination for New Mexico’s second congressional district. Mr. Vasquez will face Representative Yvette Herrell, the incumbent Republican.
Bernalillo County District Attorney Raúl Torrez defeated Brian Colón, the state auditor, in the Democratic primary for attorney general.
south dakota
Voters rejected an attempt to increase the level of support needed to pass most voter-initiated referendums to 60 percent of a majority.
Government Kristi Noem won her Republican primary, as did Senator John Thune.
Mississippi
Rep. Steven Palazzo, a Republican facing an ethical inquiry, was forced to run a runoff in his party’s primaries, according to The Associated Press. It is not yet known who he will be dealing with later this month.
