A few days after the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft landed on the south pole of the moon, the Pragyan rover has transmitted data showing the temperature profile of the lunar surface at different depths from the south pole. On Sunday, Chandrayaan-3 transmitted the first observations from Chandra’s Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE) aboard the Vikram lander.
ChaSTE measures the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil around the pole to understand the thermal behavior of the lunar surface. “It has equipped a temperature probe with a controlled penetration mechanism that can reach a depth of 10 cm below the surface,” said the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
In a tweet, ISRO said the probe is equipped with ten individual temperature sensors. The tweet included a graph that “illustrates lunar surface/near surface temperature variations at different depths as recorded during probe penetration.”
The Pragyan rover has so far sent a number of videos of it landing on the moon’s surface and taking its first step, leaving a trail of its footprints. On Saturday, the space agency released a video showing the Pragyan rover wandering around the Shiv Shakti point, the landing site of lander Vikram, on the south pole of the moon.
“Pragyan rover roams around Shiv Shakti Point in search of lunar secrets at the South Pole!” said ISRO on X (formerly Twitter).
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday in the latest edition of his monthly radio broadcast – ‘Mann Ki Baat’ – that mission ‘Chandrayaan-3’ has emerged as the symbol of the spirit of a ‘New India’, that is, under come out victorious in all circumstances.
“On August 23, our Chandrayaan-3 mission proved to the world that the dawn of revolution and determination can also illuminate the dark side of the moon. Mission Chandrayaan has become a symbol and spirit of a new India. This is an India that wants to emerge victorious at all costs. It wants to break new ground regardless of the circumstances,” Prime Minister Modi said.
