The Indian Space Research Organization will wait another fortnight to establish contact with Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram lander and Pragyan rover. ISRO will continue efforts to revive the Chandrayaan-3 lander and rover until the next lunar sunset, scheduled for October 6. However, ISRO Chief S Somnath said it is not certain when the contact with Chandrayaan-3 instruments will be established. .

ISRO Chief Chief S Somnath said on Saturday: “We don’t know when it will wake up. It could be tomorrow, but it could also be on the last day of Monday. But we try. It will be a great achievement when the lander and rover wake up.”
The biggest challenge for ‘Vikram and Pragyan’ would be to get back into action after surviving the bone-chilling temperature of -200 degrees Celsius. If the instruments on board survive the low temperatures on the moon, the modules can come back to life and continue their mission to transmit information from the moon over the next fourteen days.

S Somnath, while talking about the testing of Chandrayaan-3, had told Hindustan Times, “Rover has been fully tested. But much of the design is similar for Pragyan and Vikram. This means that the tests that worked for Pragyan should also work for Vikram.”
After conducting experiments on the moon from August 23 to September 4, Chandrayaan-3’s rover and lander modules were put to sleep in an attempt to survive the extremely cold atmosphere at the moon’s south pole.
If ISRO manages to revive the lander and rover, the information derived from experiments that could be re-conducted by the Chandrayaan-3 payloads would be a “bonus”. Former ISRO scientist Tapan Mishra said confirming the presence of water would be the next important point.
