It is amazing how much time people spend sleeping, but many of us wake up with stiffness in the neck or back and persistent pain. Thanks to our sleeping position, which slowly wears the health of the spine.
“The way you sleep can even make your joint pain worse,” warned Dr. Dushyant Chouchan, orthopedic and sports injury surgeon, AIIMS Raipur.
In an Instagram post the doctor shared how sleeping positions influence the joint pain and a number of small tweaks offered daily sleeping habits that can help you wake up with fresh and free of neck and back pain.
This is how simple tweaks can help you achieve the best sleep positions:
For the sidecar, Dr. Dushyant that placing a pillow between the knees is the optimum way to achieve a pain -free sleep. “If you usually sleep on your side, placing a pillow between your knees can significantly reduce the discomfort in your hips and lower body.”
For those who sleep on their backs, the orthopedic surgeon said it is best to place a pillow under their knees. “This simple adjustment helps to relieve the pressure on your spine and joints, so that pain in your lower back and hips is relaxed.”
“By including these two simple sleeping positions in your nocturnal routine, you can prevent unnecessary tension and experience noticeable lighting in your joints,” said Dr. Dushyant in the Instagram Reel.
He suggested that his followers try these tweaks for themselves to see the change in the morning. “… maybe you will find a less stiff and more comfortable reality,” he said.
Dr. Arun Bhanot, director of Spine Services in the CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, also repeated a similar sentiment and said: “Your sleeping position helps to minimize the back of the back, avoid stiffness and retain the correct spine lines.”
In an earlier interview with HT LifestyleDr. Bhanot advised a sturdy to medium mattress and a pillow that keeps the neck in line. He advised to sleep on the stomach or use a very high pillow.
