The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on Friday, May 10, added another achievement to its list of success stories by successfully conducting a hot test of a liquid rocket engine made using Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology, popularly called also called 3D printing. .
Let's look at the seven most important points about the 3D printed rocket engine:
- The engine the space agency tested is the PS4 engine used in the Reaction Control System (RCS) of the upper stage (PS1) of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
- According to ISRO's statement, the same engine is used in the Reaction Control System (RCS) of the first stage (PS1) of PSLV.
- The test was conducted in Tamil Nadu on Friday at the ISRO Propulsion Complex, Mahendragiri.

- As a result, the new engine now saves 97 percent of raw materials and reduces production time by 60 percent.
- A total of 13.7 kg of metal powder is now required, compared to the previous requirements of 565 kg of forgings and plates for the conventional production process.
- A press release from the space agency said, “ISRO achieved a major milestone on May 9 with the successful testing of a liquid rocket engine manufactured via AM technology for 665 seconds.”

- To highlight the breakthrough, the space agency also used social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The message read: “Breakthrough in design and manufacturing: ISRO successfully conducts long-term test of PS4 engine, redesigned for production using advanced additive manufacturing techniques and manufactured in Indian industry.”

The space agency noted that after the successful conduct of the tests, the number of deployed parts was reduced from 1 to 14 using the Laser Powder Bed Fusion technique. This eliminated a further 19 welds, resulting in huge savings in raw material consumption per engine.
