Veteran archer Deepika Kumari once again buckled under pressure and suffered a 4-6 defeat to Korea's Suhyeon Nam in the quarter-finals of the women's individual event, ending India's campaign at the Paris Olympics on Saturday. Deepika had qualified for the quarter-finals after beating Germany's Michelle Kroppen 6-4 earlier in the day. Deepika had defeated the 19-year-old Nam in straight sets in the semi-finals at the World Championships in Shanghai in April en route to winning a silver medal, but the Indian stalwart could not repeat that feat on Saturday.
The two archers were level at 4-4 after four sets, but Nam was rewarded for her consistency when she won the fifth set and advanced to the semi-finals.
Deepika, who was criticised for her underperformance in the team event, was not consistent enough and was trailed by scores of six and seven in the second and fourth sets.
The 30-year-old Indian Indian took the first set 28-26 and won two points. She then scored 10, 6 and 9 as Nam tied the score and won the second set 28-25.
Deepika took the lead again and won the third set 29-28 with two 10s. The Indian then scored 10, 7, 10 to lose the fourth set 27-29.
In the deciding set, Deepika scored 9, 9, 9 to lose the fifth set after the Korean had scored 10, 9, 10.
