Hours after star wrestler Vinesh Phogat called on athletes to join their protest against under fire chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra took to social media to announce his solidarity with the athletes. Vinesh, along with Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakashi Malik, have held an indefinite protest in Jantar Mantar against WFI supremo Singh, who allegedly harassed seven female wrestlers, including a minor.
Bindra, who has always spoken out in favor of ailing athletes, took to Twitter to call the incident “deeply concerning”.
“As athletes, we train hard every day to represent our country on the international stage. It is deeply concerning to see our athletes find it necessary to take to the streets to protest against the harassment allegations made by the Indian wrestling administration,” Bindra tweeted.
Bindra said any concerns raised by top wrestlers should be addressed by the administration.
“My heart goes out to all those affected. We must ensure that this matter is properly addressed, with athletes’ concerns being heard and addressed fairly and independently.
“This incident highlights the critical need for a proper protection mechanism that can prevent harassment and ensure justice for those affected. We must work to create a safe environment for all athletes to thrive,” he added.
