In Australia’s desperate hunt for a win, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh emerged as the match winner. He scored 52 runs off 51 balls as his team chased the 210-run target with relative ease. Marsh’s half-century was crucial to Australia’s successful chase, and after the match the all-rounder caught up with the broadcaster, where he was asked a cheeky question by Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. When asked about the coaching he received from his father Geoff, Marsh had floored everyone with his response to Gavaskar.
Gavaskar, who has played against Mitchell Marsh’s father Geoff, joked about Jr.’s success rate. Marsh and said that his father, who had a contrasting playing style compared to his son, must have taught him this way. In response, Mitchell said he is just trying to make up for his father’s poor strike rates.
“Didn’t you ever learn to play like that? (gestures with a defensive shot) Because all you do is BANG, BANG, BANG,” Gavaskar said. In response, Marsh said: “I’m just compensating for his poor strike rates”.

Marsh was delighted with the kind of performance his teammates were able to put in against Sri Lanka, securing that crucial win to keep their World Cup semi-final hopes alive.
“It was a really good day for us. We came into the game with a bit of pressure after the slow start, but our experienced guys stood up today. We’re away. I wouldn’t say I have to search deep in my heart, but there was a lot of pain [after the loss to South Africa]. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction for us. Just make up for his [dad’s] success rate. I felt like I was hitting well tonight and I was probably ahead of myself (on the run-out).
“The boys were calm and the way we finished it was great. I actually went for it but I got knocked out. We have a lot of options: three quick ones, Zampa, Maxwell, Stoin and myself. He [Cummins] always has a calm attitude. The way he bowled and his bowling changes were fantastic. Inglis is a fighter and loves a competition. He plays spin well and backs up his skills. First of all, he has power and hopefully this is the start of a long career for him,” Marsh said after the match.
