As India prepares for the 2022 T20 World Cup, they are spoiled for choice in most departments, with several veteran players in good form and newcomers also knocking on the door with their Indian Premier League (IPL) appearances. However, one player who seems to be on the back burner is veteran opener, Shikhar Dhawan. The southpaw, who last played a T20 International (T20I) against Sri Lanka last June, was not part of the 2021 T20 World Championship and has not been selected for the recently concluded 5-game run against South Africa or the series of two games against Ireland later this month.
While Dhawan has consistently impressed in the IPL, having also increased his strike rate in recent years, he has seen the likes of Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad rise above him in the pecking order among the openers, with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul still standing the first choice pair.
Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar said the fact that Dhawan was ignored by the selectors for the series against South Africa and Ireland implies he is not in the mix for a spot when India picks their T20 World Cup squad.
“No, I don’t see that. If it had to appear it would have been in this squad,” Gavaskar told Star Sports presenter when asked if he sees Dhawan’s name in discussion for the 2022 T20 World Cup.

“Because a lot of the guys went to England. It would have been in this squad. If he’s not in this squad I don’t see his name in the mix,” said Gavaskar.
The 2022 T20 World Cup will be held in Australia in October-November.
