Former goalkeeper and Ajax top man Edwin van der Sar was out of danger, but was in intensive care in hospital after a cerebral hemorrhage, his club said on Tuesday. The 52-year-old, who played for Ajax in Amsterdam and then for Manchester United, was on holiday on a Croatian island when he fell ill. “Edwin is still in intensive care, but is stable. He is not in mortal danger,” Ajax said in a statement, adding that it shared the update on behalf of Annemarie, Van der Sar’s wife.
“Every time we visit him, he is communicative. We have to wait patiently to see how his situation will develop,” said his wife.
Van der Sar announced in May that he was stepping down as Ajax’s top man after the worst season in 14 years for the historic Dutch club, which finished third in the Eredivisie.
Van der Sar played for Ajax from 1990 to 1999 and won the Champions League in 1995.
In 2008 he won the European Cup again with Manchester United after spells at Juventus and Fulham.
