Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav is really repaying the faith the selectors have shown in him. After being handed the nod for India’s World Cup squad, Kuldeep continues to spin webs around opponents’ batsmen. In the 2023 Asia Cup, the left-arm spinner has emerged as India’s brightest wicket-taking option. Indian batsman KL Rahul even had to make a confession after witnessing Kuldeep’s sensational performance that helped the team clinch a spot in the final of the Asia Cup 2023. The veteran spinner claimed his five-wicket haul in the ODI against Pakistan and backed up his performance by claiming another four-wicket haul against Sri Lanka.
Sharing his experience of watching the left-arm spinner doing his magic behind the stumps, Rahul said during the post-match conference, “He has bowled very well. When I am wicketkeeping, I enjoy watching him bowl. Sometimes Even I can’t do that. Choose the way he bowls under the lights. He has developed new tricks and you can see it is paying off. His rhythm and execution are exceptional.”
On a surface better suited to the spinners, Sri Lanka’s youngster Dunith Wellalage claimed his maiden five-wicket haul to dismantle the Indian batting line-up.
Rahul claimed that the Indian batters will go after the youngster the next time they face him.
“He was spot on. He got five wickets. He did the job for his team. He looked like the most dangerous bowler in Sri Lanka’s attack until I played. Probably next time we play we will try to go after him” , Rahul added.
As the match dawned, India’s bowling attack ended Sri Lanka’s 13 unbeaten run in ODI matches and sealed their spot in the 2023 Asia Cup final with a match to spare as the hosts chased for 172 to a measly target at the R Premadasa Stadium on Tuesday.
While spinners from both sides dominated the match, the pacers also played a role in India’s 41-run win over the co-hosts.
