Former Indian all-rounder Ajit Agarkar was appointed head of the BCCI’s selection committee for the men’s cricket team on Tuesday. “The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Ms. Sulakshana Naik, Mr. Ashok Malhotra and Mr. Jatin Paranjape interviewed applicants for the position of one selector in the men’s selection committee. The three-member CAC unanimously recommended Mr. Ajit Agarkar for the said position,” the BCCI said in a press release.
The former Indian all-rounder has represented the country in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs and four T20Is, in addition to playing 110 first-class, 270 List A and 62 T20 matches. A former fast bowler, he was part of India’s victorious side in the inaugural T20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007. He still holds the record for the fastest half-century by an Indian batsman in ODI, achieved with a 21-ball fifty against Zimbabwe in 2000. He also held the record for being the fastest to take 50 ODI wickets for nearly a decade reach and reached the milestone in just 23 games.
“Following his playing career, he was appointed as the Chief Selector for the senior Mumbai team and assumed coaching responsibilities with the Delhi Capitals. The committee further recommended Mr. Agarkar for the role of Chairman of the Men’s Selection Committee on the basis of seniority (total number of Test matches)”, added the BCCI release.

According to a PTI report, Agarkar’s appointment as chairman of the senior selection committee was just a formality after he appeared for a virtual interview with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) chaired by Ashok Malhotra on Tuesday. Agarkar, following the takeover, is reported to be chairing the selection committee meeting for the T20I squad that will play five matches in the West Indies. “Agarkar is the only candidate who appeared for an interview. It was a virtual one as he is currently abroad for a family vacation,” a BCCI source told PTI.
