Former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is in intensive care in hospital after a cerebral hemorrhage, his ex-club Ajax reported on Friday. The 52-year-old, who played for Ajax and then Manchester United, was on holiday on a Croatian island when he fell ill, NOS reports. “Edwin van der Sar has had a cerebral hemorrhage. He is currently in hospital in intensive care and his condition is stable,” Ajax said on Twitter. “As soon as there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We are thinking of you.”
Van der Sar announced in May that he was stepping down as Ajax’s top man after “an incredibly tough period” of more than ten years at the helm of the Amsterdam superpower.
His resignation came following the worst season in 14 years for the Dutch top club that finished third in the Eredivisie.
Regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers of all time, Van der Sar played for Ajax from 1990-1999 and won the Champions League in 1995.
In 2008 he won the European Cup again with Manchester United after spells at Juventus and Fulham.
Van der Sar returned to Ajax in 2012 as director of marketing before being promoted to CEO four years later.
He is also the second highest Dutch player of all time with 130 international appearances.
