FIFA World Cup: England captain Harry Kane reacts after a goal against France©AFP
Harry Kane became England’s joint all-time top goalscorer on Saturday, striking for the 53rd time against France in the quarter-finals of the World Cup and joining Wayne Rooney at the top of the charts. The captain, who was playing his 80th international, scored England’s equalizer early in the second half at Qatar’s Al Bayt Stadium to level with former Manchester United striker Rooney. The Tottenham striker scored his first senior international goal seconds after making his debut as a substitute at Wembley against Lithuania in March 2015.
The 29-year-old was named as Gareth Southgate’s captain ahead of the 2018 World Cup and led the team to the semi-finals, where he lifted the Golden Boot with six goals in Russia.
He scored four goals in last year’s European Championship to help England reach their first major final since 1966.
Kane, approaching Jimmy Greaves’ record as Tottenham’s goalscorer, is clinical with both feet and his head.
But in recent years he has also become a provider, regularly dropping back to hold up the game and become a provider for both Spurs and England.
Born in East London, Kane joined the Spurs academy in 2009.
He had a number of loan spells as a young player as he tried to establish himself for his breakthrough season with Tottenham in 2014-15.
He has since won the Premier League Golden Boot three times, but so far has failed to win club or country silverware despite coming agonizingly close.
In addition to the near misses for England, Kane was on the losing side as Tottenham Hotspur reached the Champions League final for the first time in their history in 2019, losing 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid.
