The newly elected president of Hockey India, Dilip Tirkey, said on Sunday that one of his priorities will be to promote grassroots level hockey by installing more synthetic turf in states such as Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. His first priority, however, is the men’s World Cup to be held in Odisha next January. “States like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and cities like Mumbai and Bhopal are crucial. I will go to these places and look to develop the game from the ground up. We need more artificial turf in these places to attract talent wake up,” said Tiger.
Speaking about his election as head of Indian hockey, Tirkey said: “As a player I have worked hard and represented the country in the Olympics and other major international tournaments. Now a new challenge has been entrusted to me.
“There are a lot of expectations and my first priority is the World Cup in Odisha from January 13 next year,” he said in a press release.
The HI chief was considered one of the best hockey defenders in the world during his playing days and said the 36th National Games in Gujarat will bring new talent.
“Indian hockey is in revival mode. Young people are taking it again in droves and the National Games could well be the final push the sport needs,” he said.
“As only the top eight men’s and women’s teams will be in competition, hockey will be of the highest quality. Young players can show their talent and hope to make it to the national reckoning,” he said, suggesting the selectors would be present. .
