Batter Sunil Gavaskar has questioned Rishabh Pant’s shot selection, saying it is “not a good sign” that the Indian stumper is repeatedly trapped outside the stump in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa. Pant, who has scored 740 runs in 47 T20Is at 23:12, got out in almost identical fashion as he went outside the off-stump for the big woman.
“He hasn’t learned. He hasn’t learned from his previous three layoffs,” Gavaskar said while commenting on Star Sports.
“They throw wide, and he keeps going for it. He can’t throw enough muscle at that. He has to stop looking to fly that far out of the stump.
“He’ll never tire of it. It’s gone to third place! They’re all planning it, South African bowlers and Temba Bavuma… just get wide outside the off-stump and you’ll get him.”
Pant scored 29, 5, 6 and 17 in the last four innings. “10 times he has been sent wide outside the stump (in T20s in 2022). Some of them would have been called wide if he hadn’t made contact with it. Being so far away, he must reach out to He will never have enough strength To come out in the same series in the same way, for a captain of the Indian team, that’s not a good sign,” said Gavaskar.
While not firing the bat, Pant has pooled his resources well to orchestrate India’s five-game revival with back-to-back wins to keep the series at 2-2.
After India crushed South Africa by 82 runs in the fourth game, Pant also admitted that there are “certain areas” in his at bat that he needs to improve on.

“As an individual I can try to improve in certain areas. But not too concerned. I look at the positives and look for improvement. Let’s see what happens in Bangalore. Looking forward to giving our 100 percent Pant said in the post-match presentation on Friday night.
India will face South Africa in the fifth and final T20I on Sunday.
