The Mumbai Police Department will provide green corridors for the traffic of buses carrying players and staff for the IPL 2022 season to ensure they reach the play and practice venues on time and not get stuck in traffic. More than 1,100 police, including traffic police, will be deployed for the matches in Mumbai, a senior officer said on Saturday. This year, all IPL competition matches will be held in two cities – Mumbai and Pune, and the 10 participating teams will stay in hotels in different parts of the megapolis.
League matches starting tonight will be played at Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium — both in south Mumbai, DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and MCA Stadium in Pune.
A police officer said that as the distance between the hotels where the players and team staff reside and the stadiums is far, Mumbai police are taking extra precautions regarding player safety and the timing of matches.
“As for green corridors, each team will be provided with (police) escort and security as some matches are (scheduled) during peak times. Infrastructure works are also underway in some places in Mumbai,” the officer added.
The distance between South Mumbai and DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai is about 35 kilometers and taking into account traffic related issues, Mumbai Police will coordinate with their counterparts in Navi Mumbai for smooth traffic movement, he said, adding that Thane and Pune Police will also be laying in the loop.
For matches played at Wankhede and Brabourne stadiums, police will take precautions to avoid traffic jams as Marine Drive and Churchgate stations are close by, he said.
The Chennai Super Kings team is stationed at the Trident and Delhi Capitals hotel in Taj Palace, both in south Mumbai.
Gujarat Titans reside in JW Marriott, Sahar and KKR in ITC Grand Central, in Mumbai’s Pearl.
Lucknow Super Giants reside at Taj Vivanta in Navi Mumbai and Mumbai Indians at hotel Trident in the Bandra Kurla Complex.
Punjab Kings stay in Renaissance hotel in Powai, Rajasthan Royals in Grand Hyatt in Santacruz, Royal Challengers Bangalore in Taj Lands End in Bandra, SunRisers Hyderabad in ITC Maratha, Sahar.
The teams travel to Navi Mumbai and Pune for the matches.
“Given the travel time to reach those stadiums from the players’ hotels, the police have put in place specific time-limited security plans. The necessary logistical support is also provided,” the officer said.
Mumbai Traffic Police Joint Commissioner Rajvardhan Sinha said police personnel are done with plans to transport players and direct traffic during the IPL matches.
Police will monitor the signal system on teams’ route and ensure smooth traffic flow, he said.
“We ensure that IPL teams reach the stadiums from their hotels in time for both matches and training sessions, while at the same time normal people should not suffer,” he said, adding that no route will be blocked for the movement of teams.

Each team will be accompanied by a squad made up of Traffic Police and Mumbai Police personnel when traveling for IPL games or practice sessions, he said.
Police are in touch with node officers for each team who shared their practice and match schedule 15 days in advance, Sinha added.
