Mohun Bagan Super Giant parted ways with head coach Juan Ferrando on Wednesday following the club's poor form in the Indian Super League. Technical director Antonio Habas has been appointed as interim head coach starting with the Kalinga Super Cup next week, the Indian Super League franchise announced. Ferrando was appointed head coach of the Mariners in December 2021, joining the Kolkata heavyweights from FC Goa.
Under him, Mohun Bagan won the ISL title last season and reached the inter-zonal semi-finals of the AFC Cup. Mohun Bagan also won the Durand Cup this season with Ferrando at the helm.
“Thanks to Juan Ferrando for winning this year's Durand Cup and ISL 2022-2023,” Mohun Bagan said in a short statement.
The iconic club's performances dipped this season as they exited the group stage of the AFC Cup, dropping to fifth position in the ISL standings after three straight defeats.
Habas previously managed ATK Mohun Bagan during the 2021-2022 ISL season and was the first head coach to win two ISL titles.
The Spaniard started his journey with Atletico de Kolkata in the inaugural edition of 2014 and became the first head coach to win the ISL title.
He later had a stint with FC Pune City before returning to India to join ATK FC, leading them to the ISL title during the 2019-2020 season.
Habas was back with ATK Mohun Bagan the following season and guided them to the ISL final. He parted ways with the Mariners midway through the 2021-22 season, with Ferrando taking over.
Ahead of the current season, Habas returned to Sanjiv Goenka's franchise, this time as technical director.
Mohun Bagan is defeated along with arch-rivals East Bengal in the Kalinga Super Cup. The Mariners begin their campaign on January 9.
The archrivals will compete against each other on January 19.
